“From Struggles to Success” Entrepreneurs and Genies
One of the first entrepreneurs, joining our initiative “From Struggles to Success” is Mufeez Rana. He is from Pakistan and he is a CFO in his company called Auto Genie. The company is the first virtual maintenance company in Pakistan and it is a part of the LUMS Incubator.
We asked Mufeez to share with us the story behind this great startup. He told us that before starting this business he was running a company which provides a handyman services to office and home users. At the same time his friend’s father had a distribution business and one day he asked Mufeez and his son to handle the maintenance of 25 of the company vehicles. He agreed and in the process of helping his friend`s father he found out many issues related to the car maintenance and reparation. That is how the idea came to his mind and Auto Genie was born.
We were curious to find out more information about him and his team, so we asked him couple of questions. You can read all his answers below:
1. What is your idea/ business about?
Auto Genie (www.autogenie.pk) is Pakistan`s 1st Virtual Maintenance Company. We provide car maintenance services at customer door step on scheduled time.
2. Tell us about yourself and your team?
My background is in Finance and Accounting and I have experience in service based business. Our team consist of four members. The CEO and Business developer is Hamza, he is fresh graduate in BBA. Abdullah is our CTO and he has background in Computer Sciences. The last member of our team is Hassan he is our COO and he graduated his bachelor degree in Business Sociology from Carlton University Canada.
3. What are the main struggles that you have experienced?
Our main struggles are related to handling the technical and internal processes in our company. As we are a start-up company we unfortunately do not have that much capital, which we can invest in a IT system that will help us handle day-to-day tasks, that is why at the moment we are using Excel.
4. How did you solve your problems?
It is all about the great team! We hire interns to setup all the data on daily basis and forward it to operations department.
5. If you had a chance what would you do in differently?
I will train the graduates and educated people to provide better services in Pakistan. So they will be able handle it more professionally.
6. What was the best advice you got and what was the worst?
Listen all the people, but do what is better for your business.The worst one was when some mentors came and asked us to change our business model.
7. What will be your advice to the other entrepreneurs?
“Value yourself more highly. Charge what you know you’re worth. Don’t be afraid to ask for the fair value of your services. No one is ever going to offer you more than you ask, so you might as well go for it.”
8. What are the processes to become a successful Entrepreneur?
To become a successful entrepreneur, you should have a passion. You should feel that what are you doing is the best thing. The other important thing is the team, you should find the right people and invest in them. You should reward them, appreciate them and motivate them.
One more thing that I can say is that you should put the product on the market for targeted user as soon as possible, this way you will be able to receive valuable feedback in the early stage. It is important to discuss your ideas with others and to learn from failures and successes.
