“From Struggle to Success” The Mom Entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur is a hard job and being a mom is the hardest job. Many people underestimate moms entrepreneurs and I wonder why? To raise a child you need to have patience, good time and money management, to be persistent and to learn new thing constantly. Aren’t these the same things that you need to build a successful company?

This article will introduce you to Steph Calvert. She is a published illustrator and award-winning designer behind the design company Hearts and Laserbeams. She earned her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design, has 15+ years of professional experience, and her illustration, layout, and web design work has been seen worldwide on apparel, in print, and online.

1. What is your idea/ business about? How the idea was born?

Hearts and Laserbeams helps frustrated small business owners that are fumbling through trying to do their own design work so they can look even more professional to new customers and get back to running their business.

My clients are located all over the United States, and have included all sizes of companies from indie brands like 3 Girls Holistic to household names like Kohl’s department stores.

2. Tell me about yourself and your team?

I’m a work at home mom, and I share the office with two littles. Phil is five so he’s in school now, but Joy is eighteen months so she’s always keeping me on my toes! I’ve also got a great development team that helps out on our more complicated web projects, and a couple of interns that have been learning more about the design business through paid projects.

3. What are the main struggles that you have experienced?

The work/life balance is especially difficult when the work happens in your house. Balance is possible, but you have to really make it a priority. You have to be vigilant!

4. How did you solve your problems?

I think we business owners are always working on that work/life balance, because work and life always have a few surprises you aren’t expecting!

5. If you had a chance what would you do differently?

I leapt headfirst into self employment immediately after my son was born, returning from maternity leave to a full time design job that was drastically different from the one I left behind, in a bad way. It was absolutely the best thing for my family in the long run, but if I had to do it over I would’ve planned out the transition to self employment a little more.

6. What was the best advice you got and what was the worst?

I think the best advice I’ve gotten is to remember what your own version of success is – I’ve got plenty of colleagues that are doing really big things at huge companies, and on the one hand that could make me sad… Or I could remember that I became self employed so I could provide a better home environment for my kids and that it’s been going strong for five years now… That’s my success, and I’m proud of it.

7. What will be your advice to the other entrepreneurs?

Never ever ever give up. If something’s not working, stop hitting your head against the brick wall and find another way.
