“Life with Equality” by Sowmya Sankaran
“If not you, who else will?” – Yes, that’s how my entrepreneurship started at the age of 18 when all that I knew was my goal and nothing else.
I accidentally preferred part time work to make some extra cash and the choice of work had turned out to be writing even without having knowledge. As I started before 2009, I handled my engineering as well as freelancing opportunities simultaneously and had come out with flying colors. I had set a small firm in 2010 comprising of people from socially downtrodden backgrounds who were mentally trained, physically encouraged and skillfully tuned.
After I stepped into the domain of entrepreneurship, I had always asked this question to myself – “What would you do just by earning money? Will helping a life has better impact than making money?” Soon after I completed my engineering in 2012, my fate did play mischievously in my life. I had to be hospitalized for over 2 years and medicated till date for an issue unidentified by medical experts. I trusted my capacity. I still remember the times when I had overcome the power of anesthesia just because I had to write an important article for my client.
Although fate cannot be replaced by wit, your self confidence can certainly help you enrich in your attempts. I lost speech due to incorrect medicines and those two months had created an amazing impact in my life. I decided to spread the concept of “Humans with Equality” which I transformed now to “Life with Equality”. When I was at the critical emergency ward in 2013, I can still recall the amount of encouragement I gave to a patient next bed to help overcome her stress. I started “Humans with Equality” as a self-motivated initiative.
The initiative slowly grew when I realized that it is high time I meet people individually and help them out. As it was a solely founded and owned initiative, I strongly believed in the concept of “Everything starts within you.” I have met 300+ people from bizarre backgrounds and have rehabilitated them by some means. All that I got back was LOVE which is the most essential and rarest gift one can get!
I decided to change the title “Humans with Equality” to “Life with Equality” to ensure that I respect every life including plants, animals and humans. I, as an individual, have performed numerous rescues of animals, promotion of soulful farming and plant protection to villages in Thiruvannamalai and Chengalpattu and motivated a large group of transgenders from Namakkal district. I take care of 30+ days in my locality, 5 snakes, 5 pigeons, rabbits and several other rare species and indeed, I take care of them soulfully and they are my life.
The team comprises of 100+ active volunteers and 350+ volunteers round the country in addition to 100+ volunteers located in USA, Dubai, Singapore who agree to every step taken by the startup. It is these volunteers who have driven the social entrepreneurial initiative to this stage. As we all started with several initiatives to spread equality among humans, volunteers have never hesitated to assemble for a discussion or to speak to higher authorities to spread the mission. “Be a Roman when you are in Rome” goes the saying but we tried building Rome to accumulate Romans and transform anti-Romans to Romans.
Being a non-registered startup so far, the individual motivations and the group support have gathered attention from various countries. Our legal advisors are available in Chennai, Kolkatta, Delhi and UAE. Our volunteers spread the word to local people, coordinate with them and organize events. Events in spreading equality have been conducted in Trichy, Chennai and Delhi so far. The immense response from college students encourages even further. We have also partnered with similar other social startups to enhance the reach. We have proposed to register to make our vision big and add value to our services being made.
Today, I trust that the social entrepreneurship in me has cherished my life than profitable entrepreneurship. “Your wisdom grows when you begin to respect a life”. Indeed, every life demands a space and recognition by another survivor. Why deny when you get affection in lieu? As entrepreneurship involves a lots of ups and downs, my income has never been stable. Still, it is a fulfilled moment when every penny that I make goes to the animals and plants so far except the amount that I pay for my house rent.
I have not asked a rupee from anyone or never asked any moral support during rescues. All that I take during rescues is the self-motivated spirit and confidence. Though it has inspired and even changed the minds of people around me, I still feel that my aim of spreading equality among all lives will succeed only when every individual feels the same.
I am just 24 and I strongly believe that my vision is not so far. I do not bother if I spend my income for the kiddoos (animals, plants and distressed people) around. I would also deny that social entrepreneurship is not about ROI but about the positive, sustainable impact it creates.
If you find this piece inspirational, that is where my success begins. Respect a fellow life and you will be respected! Before I sign off, all that I advise readers is to live to love and get loved! Spread love for every living being!
