’’From struggle to success’’ The passion for challenges

Entrepreneurship in the health sector is growing rapidly and we can see many great solutions, which are improving our lives. In this interview we will meet you with a Nikolaj Kjær Nielsen from Denmark. He is the founder of Sarita CareTech.

1. What is your idea/ business about? How the idea was born?

The idea for Sarita CareTech was born in 2011, when our founder, Nikolaj Kjær Nielsen, worked at a Nursing home. Part of his job, was administering medicine to one of the patients before bedtime. One morning, as he came to check on her, he found her lying on the floor. She had fallen during the night, unable to call for help, meaning no one knew of her mishap.

In order to prevent a similar situation from ever occurring again, Nikolaj pulled together a talented team of people, who have worked tirelessly for the past three years to create an efficient, electronic and user-friendly solution, the Sarita Smart Necklace, pioneering to prevent anyone from facing an injury without immediate help.

Sarita alerts the guardians if the elderly user has fallen, wandered off or is in need of assistance. The Sarita connects to our online service, Sarita Lighthouse. From here you can monitor the user’s health, whereabouts, the device’s battery level, and set up your network of guardians.

2. Tell me about yourself and your team?

The team consists of the two founders Nikolaj, the hardware engineer and CEO, and Nikolai, the software engineer and resident Rubik’s cube master. Then we have Rasmine, our office manager, keeping the lights on and everyone sane, Daniel, the PR and sales manager, always looking for new ways to spread the word about Sarita, and Denés, our chief marketing manager, keeping up with our finances and designing websites and marketing campaigns. Our team is constantly growing, as we develop and search for new ways to improve Sarita. Right now the team has been working tirelessly at getting Sarita ready for our Kickstarter campaign, starting at the end of May.

3. What are the main struggles that you have experienced?

This is quite a hard question to answer because when launching a startup there is nothing, but struggles along the way, and that means they are not seen as struggles, but rather as challenges to be solved.

A specific example could be having a zero marketing budget, but with endless drive and persistence you find a way to overcome it.

The passion for solving the problem at hand has always driven us forward; and when something proved difficult to solve, that thing kept us going. The importance of believing in the product you are creating, and the desire to solve the problem this product can help with, is everything.

4. How did you solve your problems?

When there was a problem with office space, we moved into a bigger location. When we needed more backend developers, we went out and found them. When we needed front end developers, we went out and found them.

When we needed marketing minded people, we went out and found them. When we needed to define a better suited message for our targeted audience we created focus groups, interviews, and surveys and developed a better message. If a problem occurs, it isn’t seen as a problem at Sarita CareTech, but rather as the next task that needed fulfilment.

5. If you had a chance what would you do in differently?

When we think anything should have been done differently, that means that we have reflected back on a situation that we have gone through and learnt from it. Overcoming any failure is a huge and invaluable learning experience and one that we would not want to go without.

6. What was the best advice you got and what was the worst?

There is not one person in the world that can create it, sell it and look after the money. You need a team, and you should build that team from an early stage and stay flexible to the needs of the consumers.

7. What will be your advice to the other entrepreneurs?

If you find a problem within society and posses the mind and will power to create a solution to solve that problem then go for it, don’t stop. If you need something or lack something, don’t give up but rather accept that you don’t posses the capabilities to do everything, and build a solid trustworthy team around you.

Hello, if there is anything that we can gather from all of these entrepreneurs, there is one item that stands out (from many). We can all agree that we developed a team. Did you note in these stories how particular trained and educated people did their works that they were excellent at? And yet, they kept focused on the main goal, the large vision of the organization. Excellent articles.
